Watch out for dangerous rental scooters or mopeds

You head to Myrtle Beach for a getaway. You need some time near the ocean. You want to forget about your job for a week. Maybe you want to take the kids somewhere new and exciting; maybe you plan to travel by yourself or with a spouse.

No matter what, it is a trip geared around relaxation and fun. That's it. You feel sick of endless goals and deadlines. A vacation helps that stress just float away. It recharges you and shows you what you're working for.

As such, you do not even want to rent a car. You stay close to the coast, and you rent mopeds and scooters when you want to get around. It really makes you feel like you're on vacation, rather than on your daily commute. It's freeing. It makes you feel like a kid again.

The risks

As much fun as mopeds and powered scooters can be, remember that they can also be very dangerous. A few of the risks you face include:

  • You have absolutely no protection. There is no seat belt or airbag. There are no roll bars. If you get in an accident, there is a very good chance that your body will directly contact the other vehicle. Even with proper safety gear, like a helmet, you stand a high chance of getting injured.
  • Mopeds often go faster than people realize. It is not as if you're just driving around at five miles per hour. Many of the smallest ones can reach up to 40 MPH. Larger ones can go 60 MPH, the same speed as a car. That speed is exciting, but it's quite risky with little protection.
  • Mopeds are small and often nearly invisible to other drivers. People overlook them all the time. This can lead to accidents that drivers would easily have avoided if you were in a car. For instance, a driver may never see your moped and turn left in front of you.
  • Mopeds are very quiet. While motorcycles are also small and suffer from visibility issues, they, at least, have loud engines to attract attention. Mopeds do not.
  • Any hazard puts you at risk. A pothole that you would not even notice in your car can cause a moped accident. Debris in the road suddenly feels like a minefield.
  • Weather hazards also get worse. You hope it stays sunny for your entire vacation, but it may not. If a storm rolls in while you are already riding, you could find yourself on slick roads in a downpour, making it harder to see, to be seen and to stay in control.

If you do get involved in a moped accident while on vacation, make sure you understand all of the legal options you have to seek compensation.
