Deadly motor vehicle accidents are rising on Interstates

During the summer months, Interstate highways across the state of South Carolina are frequently congested and very dangerous. Not only are these roadways crowded with tourists and vacationers, but also commercial traffic as recent economic growth has spawned an increased need for the transportation of merchandise and other goods. Since large vehicles such as tractor-trailers are sharing the same roads as smaller passenger vehicles, motor vehicle accidents on South Carolina interstates are more likely to result in serious injuries or fatalities. Recently, an accident involving tractor-trailers along I-26 in Charleston resulted in the death of a woman.

The accident involved five vehicles and happened in the eastbound lanes of Intestate 26 during the afternoon hours. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a tractor-trailer and a GMC pickup truck were traveling east and were slowing due to traffic congestion. Apparently, a second tractor-trailer struck the pickup truck from behind, igniting a chain-reaction crash.

The second tractor-trailer then collided with an SUV, according to reports. Authorities say the tractor-trailer and the SUV both caught fire after the collision. The driver of the tractor-trailer was able to escape, but tragically, the driver of the SUV was unable to escape and was killed in the fire, police say. Authorities said the tragic accident shut down all eastbound lanes of I-26 for hours.

Unfortunately, crashes along interstate highways seem to be on the rise. Those in South Carolina who have lost loved ones in motor vehicle accidents such as this may be able to take legal action. A successful lawsuit could provide crucial financial relief to to help with end-of-life expenses and other monetary losses.
