Alcohol greatly increases the odds for motor vehicle accidents

Its common knowledge that alcohol and driving do not mix. Despite increased public awareness, drunk driving continues to be a very real and serious problem in the state of South Carolina and across the country. Alcohol significantly impairs judgment and delays reaction time, two crucial abilities needed for safely operating a motor vehicle. Driving drunk greatly increases the likelihood for fatal motor vehicle accidents.

A recent accident on French Santee Road near Jamestown left one person dead and another in handcuffs. The accident happened around noon and, according to reports, involved a single vehicle. Reports say the driver of a Ford Mustang ran off the road and collided with some trees.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol arrived to find a passenger pinned inside the car. Tragically, authorities say the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and arrested, police say. Police charged the driver with felony DUI. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, this was the eighth traffic death so far this year in Berkeley County.

Driving while under the influence of alcohol is one of the most dangerous things that a person can do. Statistics indicate that over half of all motor vehicle accidents are caused by impaired drivers. Those that drive while intoxicated not only put their own lives at risk, but they also endanger the lives of all others around them. South Carolina citizens that suffer injury or loss due to an that accident such as this can take legal action. A successful lawsuit could provide much-needed compensation as well as a sense of justice.
