Motor vehicle accidents: 2 hurt in car crash in South Carolina

A four-vehicle car accident on Sept. 28 held up traffic in Fort Mill and injured two people. South Carolina Highway Patrol, which typically responds to and investigates motor vehicle accidents on state highways and interstates, was on the scene of the crash. One driver is suspected of having been driving under the influence, and she is now facing charges.

According to the accident report, the driver of a sedan apparently ran a red light before striking another vehicle what was described as a "glancing blow." The woman then reportedly continued to drive before striking a van head-on. Both she and the driver of the van suffered injuries first responders identified as non life-threatening. It is unclear if they were treated on the scene or taken to a local hospital.

The woman now faces one charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, one charge for an open container violation and several other alcohol-related violations. It was not reported when she is scheduled to appear in court. No court date has been set for her at this time. It is unclear whether she remains in police custody or if she has been released on bail.

In motor vehicle accidents where it is clear a driver contributed materially to the crash, criminal charges may be forthcoming. In this case, South Carolina prosecutors will submit evidence of her intoxication in criminal court to prove her role in the crash. This evidence can also be used by the van driver she injured, should he wish to file a personal injury lawsuit against her. It is his right to do so under state law, and these proceedings are overseen by a civil court.
